Prior to his untimely passing in 2018, there was perhaps no more influential and visionary composer on the planet than Jóhann Jóhannsson. Primarily known to larger audiences as the composer of choice for drama and intensity in film (Arrival, Sicario, The Theory of Everything), the Icelandic maestro was busily honing a tenderly human body of multimedia work in a neoclassical and minimal vein. The Last and First Men is one such example, a sci-fi-informed journey across decayed utopias through heavenly drones and earthen melodies, accompanied by ominous architectural imagery and a sublime narration by Tilda Swinton.
