While there is still some of Slowdive’s widescreen sonic architecture to this LP, Scott turns away from harmony here to deliver something much more caustic and torrid. Many of the tracks in the album’s first half are helmed by fraught, screeching drones - ‘Mowo’, with its juddering electronic malfunctions, is particularly jarring. Kainos’ later stages allow occasional releases of tension through birdsong or pattering beats, but the vibe remains murky to the end. Coil and Nurse With Wound are closer compadres of Kainos.
