On their debut LP Immersion Chamber, Lunch Money Life demonstrate that they are at once part of and apart from the acclaimed new London jazz wave. Sure, this record is certainly rooted in jazz and its related genres, but the feel of this thing is decidedly sloppier and more brooding than, say, Ezra Collective. The early sound of BADBADNOTGOOD can be detected throughout in the bloom of tracks like ‘Lincoln’, but there is also a hard and erratic edge to parts of Immersion Chamber that invokes the sort of street-level jazz-concrete one has heard coming from Onyx Collective over the past couple of years. Meanwhile tunes like ‘Living3000’ do some astral travelling and there is the proggy heaviness of The Physics House Band to ‘Truth Serum’.
