Minor Science is an artist who is now acutely associated with the Whities label. Angus Finlayson has very much made his name via the imprint, with 3 EPs for Whities helping to establish Minor Science as a premier club innovator in recent years. As such, it is fitting that Second Language, the first LP to emerge under the Minor Science name, should do so through Whities.
On the surface, Second Language is full of the same experimental tendencies that we find in braindance and deconstructed club music. Tracks such as ‘Balconies’ and ‘For Want Of Gelt’ zip around the monitors with the urgency of a Squarepusher joint, and the album is also replete with an array of slower numbers whose bright keyboard sounds nod to IDM’s 90s heyday.
However, neither of these terms sit quite right with the Minor Science style due to the fact that Finlayson’s music is rather immediate and visceral in comparison. As such, the major association that comes through here is with Special Request in the way that Minor Science plays with and repurposes familiar rave sounds without losing sight of the dancefloor. Playful, openhearted electronics can also be discerned in the DNA of Second Language, and when the synths are buffed to a shine we get little nods to the glory days of PC Music.
Minor Science intersperses bold, innovative rave tracks with more contemplative numbers on his debut full-length album Second Language.
