The world of modern classical composition — and indeed its sub-world of film and TV scores — lost an incredible and vital talent with the death of Jóhann Jóhannsson. Before he came to expand the sound world of director Denis Villeneuve features like Arrival, Sicario and Blade Runner 2049, 4AD opined to release his sixth solo LP, 2008’s Fordlandia. Named for Fordlândia, Henry Ford’s failed Brazilian rubber plant, Jóhannsson mulls over faded utopias with the deep-set melancholia of early 20th century avant garde composers — think Webern, Schoenberg — pulled through the delicate auditory space of Max Richter and Brian Eno.
