Steve Spacek - Houses (Black Focus Records) LP
Steve Spacek claims that he can knock out house tracks in ten minutes. We believe him, you know - as part of both Africa HiTech and in his career as a solo artist, Spacek has proven time and again that he is a highly capable operator on the dancefloor.
Mind you, Spacek says that he took a little longer to craft each of the tunes on his new LP Houses. Busying himself once again with his trusty iPad - Spacek’s instrument of choice these days and one that he claims has liberated his practise - he has constructed a collection of shuffling house delights for the rising Black Focus Records.
Across Houses we find Spacek channelling Moodymann, Theo Parrish and the recent output of Galcher Lustwerk. Jams like ‘Rawl Aredo’ and ‘Waiting 4 You’ coast on smooth-as-silk four-to-the-floor house beats whose velveteen chord progressions provide an excellent foil for Spacek’s delicate, soulful vocals. While this vibe is maintained throughout Spacek’s production also becomes more playful as the record progresses - ‘Love 4 Nano’ and closer ‘Bright Eyes Rev’ are full of the breathless energy of early Floating Points. Those who cop the digital edition of Houses will also be treated to a quartet of bonus tracks (also featured on the Catch The Loop 3 cassette).
After turning heads with full-lengths from Kamaal Williams and Mansur Brown, Black Focus Records continue their impressive recent run with a new LP from the legendary Steve Spacek.
