Sufjan Stevens teams up with Lowell Brams - the titular character from Stevens’ Carrie And Lowell LP, no less - for a set of modern-day synth investigations in the form of new album Aporia. The sounds used here draw from new-age and kosmische music, but Stevens’ musical mind is far too curious for Aporia to ever become pastiche. For instance, the record’s more tranquil pastures butt up against the Ligeti-esque microtonality of ‘Backhanded Cloud’ or the Sunn O)))-style heavy drone that pokes through on ‘Matronymic’.
