It’s a true wonder how a bass-and-drum duo like Lightning Bolt manage to make such a damned racket of cataclysmic proportion. For any of the uninitiated, 2001’s Ride The Skies is a definitive jumping off point. Far more full than its meagre instrumentation, Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson’s blistering screeches, simmering lows, and an ever-present rhythmic logic (bordering on illogic) make up nothing short of avant-noise rock magic. Each tune is like a magic eye painting, hitherto unthinkable sonic textures arranged in strange sequential orders and — if experienced long enough — becomes a technicolour vista of Lightning Bolt’s gnarly worldview.
