Reverberations Volume 1 is a raw rehearsal tape from Bristolian heavy-psych legends The Heads. Recorded at a band practice in 2005, this album demonstrates once more that, when they get going, The Heads are pretty much matchless when it comes to combining stoner-rock musing with the heaviness of metal. The jams here go about as far-out as you can go - across double-digit runtimes the band lock into monstrous loping grooves ala Electric Wizard, descend into hell through walls of noise, and at points even push through to something approaching Bitches Brew territory. The gritty, lo-fi recording quality of Reverberations Vol. 1 only serves to emphasise the blown-out brilliance of this music. Making themselves known alongside likeminded label Rooster, Cardinal Fuzz get in on The Heads’ revival with a stinking great compilation of archival live and rehearsal takes from the Bristolian psychedelic rock legends. Reverberations Vol. 1 drops the listener right into the throng of hellfire, or at least, at a ringside sofa apt for bearing witness to its deep meditative greatness, through which the collected shadow histories of Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground and Grateful Dead take root and expand. In other words, here be squalling guitars, bloody-minded grooves, and (what else?) glorious, glorious noise.
