Ivan Smagghe and Rupert Cross reunite for another magnificently realised collaborative effort on Often Music. 1819 might sound wispily thin in texture — as ambient sounds often flit in and out of earshot before taking discernible forms — but the bittersweet depth of these recordings betray a gulf of feeling. It’s not nostalgic, per se; the eight tracks of 1819 feel indelibly real and moored to spaces and time, perhaps long gone, perhaps lurking just behind the curtain.
