After The Movie, Ricardo Tobar’s third EP for Musar Recordings, contains the sort of ambitious and often beautiful electronics that we have come to expect from the Chilean artist. There is enough motion to these cuts to call them techno - particularly opening pair ‘After The Movie’ and ‘Regain Your Power’, whose crisp programming recalls Pantha Du Prince. However, Tobar’s treatments here are far more widescreen than many of his dancefloor contemporaries, and the way that his synths invoke wide-open plains or starry night skies draws as much from kosmische music as it does dancefloor styles. It’s fitting, then, that Tobar’s sonic contemporaries Plaid should contribute their own cinematic remix of After The Movie’s title-track.
