Where his 2019 release Graal (Prologue) was born from extensive periods of touring and a desire to create visually — anything but sonically, so it goes — Lys signals German producer Christian Löffler’s triumphant return to a considered musical output, and it shows. The likes of ‘Farr’, ‘Weiß’, and ‘Bergen’ posses a certain vividness and colour; washed out drones across light electronic beats, like the first brush of paint on a crisp, fresh canvas. But Lys’ true characteristic can’t be pinned to any single genre, with partial thanks to its vocal guests Josephine Philip, Menke, Finn. and Mohna, lending the inner glow of Löffler’s ambient production an air of pop sophistication.
