With Super Majnoon [East Meets West], the jazz quartet featuring Pat Thomas (piano), Antonin Gerbal (drums), Joel Grip (bass) and Seymour Wright (alto sax) — known collectively as [Ahmed] — compose heavily rhythmic, free jazz-indebted chaos (‘Majnoon’, after all, comes from Arabic slang for ‘crazy’). Citing the overall influence of late musician-philosopher Ahmed Adbul-Malik’s cross-continental jazz concoctions, the fiery troupe conceive of blinding hot jazz as unification process.
