Coming sharpish off of The Peyote Dance, Patti Smith’s previous about-face with Soundwalk Collective, Mummer Love finds the avant-rock project press further into the unknown reaches of modernism. Last time around, Anton Artaud’s pursuit of opioids in the Chihuahua region of northern Mexico was rendered as a hallucinogenic musical experience; this time the sonic journey takes us to a different continent altogether, in the tracks of French modernist Arthur Rimbaud, who sought renunciation of the material world among the Sufis of in Harar, Ethiopia.
