Still no sign of Dear Tommy, the Chromatics LP that we’ve been waiting for ever since 2014, but no matter - Johnny Jewel and the gang have sated us with the drop of new full-length Closer To Grey. This collection finds the group sticking to what they know best and turning in a range of evocative, Lynchian synth-pop numbers. Influences from minimal-wave, Italo-disco and New Beat can still be parsed, and Ruth Radelet’s valium-hazed vocals remain as bewitching as ever. Covers of The Jesus And Mary Chain and Simon & Garfunkel - yes, of ‘The Sound Of Silence’ - only add to Closer To Grey’s mystique.
