The latest Awesome Tapes From Africa salvo is a reissue of Ivorian singer/ahoko player Antoinette Konan’s eponymous 1986 LP. This is an unusual set of West African synth-pop - the melodies and harmonies are all there, but the off-beat rhythms and hypnotic drones that Konan and her arranger Bamba Moussa Yang craft here sets Antoinette Konan apart from some of ATFA’s other recent re-releases. It’s beguiling stuff and another example of superior crate-digging from label boss Brian Shimkovitz.
