The experimental end of house is generally seen as more academic and cautious than its uplifting mainstream. However, on Workshop 26 Whodat and Viola Klein prove that you can have both. ‘Funeral Song’ and especially its B-side ‘Reprise AoUFC’ are unusual tracks - ‘Funeral Song’ because of its slightly stop-start beat, ‘Reprise AoUFC’ on account of the stubborn low-slung groove it is built on (one that recalls Nikki Nair). However, both are made hugely soulful due to impassioned messages of equality (the latter) and sunny, invigorating chord progressions (the former).
