These days Ryuichi Sakamoto is possibly best-known as a composer of spare, pretty piano music, but that wasn’t always the case. In 1978 Sakamoto released Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto, an unclassifiable record many years ahead of its time. This LP takes in so much across forty-five minutes - we get electro, horror movie synth scores, show-stopping piano music and a sort of squelchy version of the refined pastiche-disco sound Sakamoto would later make with the Yellow Magic Orchestra. All these years on, Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto still doesn’t really sound like anything else. This groundbreaking LP has been reissued by WEWANTSOUNDS.
