Jazz pianist and composer Randy Weston passed away in 2018 at the ripe old age of 92. On Timbuktu, Weston’s Malian friend Cheikh Tidiane Seck reinterprets some of Weston’s compositions with a rotating cast of musicians that includes Manu Dibango and Abd Al Malik. Rather than a record of deep mourning, Timbuktu is in fact an exuberant set of Afro-jazz. Tracks like ‘Mr. Randy’ and ‘Tanjah’ rollick along on righteous grooves and hot-fingered horn playing.
