Can you name another octogenarian who’s working as hard as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry is at the moment? We certainly can’t. Even by his high standards 2019 has been a fine year, with the Upsetter dropping his late-period masterpiece Rainford and the Makumba Rock disco-plate as well as prepping the forthcoming Heavy Rain LP (a set of Rainford dubs).
However, it would appear that Perry still has plenty more to say before the decade closes out. New EP Life Of The Plants contains tracks that Perry cut alongside Peaking Lights and Ivan Lee. This record contains five lengthy numbers - none of them clock in under 8 minutes, and the longest, ‘No Age Dub’, almost gets into double-figures. Perry focusses on lyrics and singing here, his words of wisdom and spiritual musings floating across the tracks like a guiding spirit.
The long runtimes allow Perry and his collaborators to really luxuriate in their grooves. The sound that Lee and Peaking Lights come up with here is a potent neo-dub blend, one that will be familiar to anyone who has heard their respective solo releases. Driving forward on rocksteady electronic riddims, their organs and synths spiralling ever higher, these tunes feel very much like an extension of the Rainford universe that Perry crafted with Adrian Sherwood. Things only get trippier as we enter Life Of The Plants’ latter stages due to the fact that the final two cuts are dubs of earlier tracks ‘Magik’ and ‘No Age’.
With the Life Of The Plants EP, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry delivers yet another essential release in his ever-expanding catalogue.
