In the Igbo language, “osondi owendi” amounts to something like “one man’s treasure, another man’s trash”. Use the phrase in Nigeria today, however, and it’ll likely bring to mind the glorious highlife of Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe. The song ‘Osondi Owendi / Ndida Kanma’ is a lovely lilt of a tune, laid back as it is absolutely infectious, masking the dramatic changes brought along after Nigeria’s bloody civil war, after which Osadebe distanced himself from post-WWII orchestral nostalgia for something altogether much funkier.
