Encompassing the plights of Kentucky women from 1775 to the present day, Rachel Grimes’ The Way Forth is an opera working on a vast scale, sonically travelling non-linearly throughout wartime strife and prosperous peace. Everyday life is transformed into haunting presences across Grimes’ expansive work, from traditional church songs and prayers to popular tunes and folk songs, from the names of rivers and towns to environmental collapse and civil war.
