Originally recorded in Morocco back in 1994, Maleem Mahmoud Ghania and Pharaoh Sanders’ The Trance of Seven Colours marks the musical zenith across two fused traditions: North African and North American. Ghania dons his percussive stringed instrument, the guimbri, while Sanders moves his searching tenor sax across the high end. Gnawa music, of which Ghania was a flawless master, is primarily used for healing and spiritual purification; a practice well known to Sanders across his own back catalogue.
