The 4th album, FLEX is the first on patten’s brand new independent 555-5555 imprint, following in the footsteps of the quietly influential label Kaleidoscope (2007-2017: Karen Gwyer, Yearning Kru, Sapphire Slows, Sculpture, The Newcomer, Aldous RH etc). After working with a guest vocalist for 2016’s Psi LP and 2017’s Requiem EP, on FLEX, patten returns solo with sights set on fuelling hi-tech dancefloor epiphanies. The new album unlocks a portal into an ultramodern potent strain of shape shifting, prismatic club music. Splicing together arrays of mutated sonics, rhythms and bassweight into hallucinogenic hybrids of footwork, trap, UK garage, grime, hip-hop and techno.
With gothic-tinged melodies, scuffed bassweight, vocal cutups, found sound and fx, patten is mutating the building blocks of club sonics into a prismatic form of soundsystem music. Genre agnostic as always, influences from shoegaze, Modern Classical, Hip Hop and Goth seep into his shape shifting liquid metal constructions, alongside austere breaks, chiptune synths and rave-era pads.
FLEX will take a number of forms in the coming weeks, with videos, installations, zines, a custom perfume, stage design, a series of skateboards, ltd apparel etc
patten’s 555-5555 imprint joins the radio show, club night and creative agency of the same name. The self-run entity behind the visual world of FLEX and all of patten’s distinctive visuals to date has been creating iconic work in design, music, fashion and art, including creative direction and design for Caribou’s Jiaolong label & Daphni project, Tron run/R artwork for Disney, live EU tour visuals for The Glitch Mob, video soundtracking for Topshop, and projections for MoMA in LA. In mid-2018, patten branched out further, launching 555-5555 forum, an independent, ad-free and algorithm-resistant platform hosting users from across the globe, sharing and discussing ideas, new music, design, art & everything in-between, outside of the constraints of social media.
After a foundational quartet of tripped out Warp releases, the classic No Pain In Pop debut GLAQJO XAACSSO, and the fabled limited CDRs before that, FLEX sees patten creating singular visions across music, design and visuals, entirely on his own terms.
