Soul Jazz Records’ excellent Lloyd McNeill reissues series continues with the flautist’s Elegia LP, a record that was originally released as a private press back in 1980. McNeill’s was a particularly vibrant style of spiritual jazz, one with heavy emphasis on rhythm and groove, and on Elegia we find him applying this formula to various Brazilian forms. There are also moments of deep and heavy composition that, for all their experimental energy, have a beautiful sonorous quality to them.
