This is a rare occasion for Shigeto — aka Zachary Saginaw — having invited a cohort of musicians for his Versions EP. But distinct as this bonfire lounge record seems among his near-decade stint with Ghostly International, much of the record is about looking back. Past and present coalesce in a tantalising circle, opening time warps back to Shigeto’s early days jamming with Ann Arbour Community High School artist in residence Vincent York, who unlocked the potential of Saginaw’s inimitable style. Versions finds Saginaw’s ensemble stroll their way through, aptly enough, new arrangements of old works, encasing the familiarity of these tunes with light bop charm and samba motion.
