Despite emerging from Tokyo’s burgeoning rap and hip-hop scene, emcee Ma found the allure of unadulterated noise too good to resist. With Ama, Ma mines a distinctly Japanese vein of lyricism and sound, far from the urban sprawls of the east and west US coasts; ritualistic throat singing accompany deadpan deliveries, rain and moss textures flood the mix when a pure wash of unadulterated house isn’t doing the same.
