Calika is Simon Kealoha, an artist focused on exploring the uneasy interface between electronic and acoustic music. Following his debut "Small Talk Kills Me" on Audiobulb, Simon has released music on the Polyfusia label as one part of Clifford/Kealoha (a collaboration with Mark Clifford from Seefeel) and a further album, "The Bright Spot" on Benbecula. Calika's aesthetic combines the strings of dismantled pianos, harps, mouth organs and dismembered voices. The nuances of these sources are combined with Simon's acoustic and bass guitar and his synthesiser playing. These tonal elements are set against an off-kilter backbeat of percussion made from found-sounds and processed drum kits. The album is great, with alot of depth of emotion using unusual methods to invoke those emotions.
