For Pharaoh Sanders, 1989’s Moon Child bookended a decade of musical soul searching. The jazz legend had already set the world ablaze with spiritual serenity and ecstatic outrage, and so the bandleader turned his hand toward traditional forms of the genre — which is to say, Moon Child disappointed the heads. But what do they know? The LP is a grand old time throughout, and Sanders has never been more eminently sing-along-able as he is on its title track. It’s no wonder Kamasi Washington is such a devotee.
