Having previously made work under names like Sutekh and Suite K, Rrose has been active since a run of releases on Sandwell District back in 2011 first brought attention to the project. After a steady flow of EPs, singles and collaborative records across the rest of the decade, we now get the debut LP from Rrose through their own Eaux imprint.

Rrose’s sonic touchstones are spread far and wide on Hymn To Moisture. Rrose has always boasted quite the array of influences, as likely to draw from classic Detroit techno as they are from avant-garde artists like Eliane Radigue or Phill Niblock. Throughout this record we find tracks which seem torn between whether to put their heads down and become DJ tools or drift off into more abstract arenas. On cuts like ‘Dissolve’ and ‘Columns’ this creates a deliciously tense sound, one where dubbed-out minimal techno rhythms are beset by broiling textures and erratic, temperamental electronics. Fellow techno innovators Matmos, Ziur and Metrist are the artists who spring to mind when listening to these things.

Hymn To Moisture also contains moments where the beats take a backseat. ‘Saliva’ and ‘Open Cell’ are brooding entries, their seasick sub bass and whirring atmospherics bordering on illbient. The album’s title track is more clear-headed - its sonorous synth patterns and dawn-chorus ambiences are not a million miles away from Rrose’s former collaborator Charlemagne Palestine.

Rrose presents a set of futurist, experimental electronic tracks on their debut LP Hymn To Moisture.
