AMRA is a new project formed by Emptyset’s Paul Purgas and Imran Perretta. On this, their debut release, AMRA use the South Asian sound archive of the same name to make brooding, powerful music that oscillates between potent ambiences and dark groove tracks. While you wouldn’t characterise ‘Shiva Dance’ as techno, exactly, the track certainly contains the same drive as something by Belief Defect or Phase Fatale. ‘Heema’, meanwhile, draws from Prurient and mid-period Björk.
