“It’s so much darker now”, begins vocalist Cal Donnelly at the head of Kaputt’s debut LP Carnage Hall, and an essential state of the nation piece of work animates into action. The Glaswegian sextet conjure a desolate landscape of empty music halls and decaying infrastructure via no wave sax skronks and guitars that sound like mangled slinkies falling down a set of stairs, all wrapped up in Devo-meets-B-52’s post-punk chaos.
