James Massiah has made his name on NTS’s THE POÆTRY SHOW, a broadcast series that blends music, spoken word and poetry. On this, his debut release, Massiah shows off his variety of skills with a series of leftfield instrumentals and eloquent bars. ‘Natural Born Killers’ crests on a lo-fi beat that’s pitched somewhere between Delroy Edwards and Dean Blunt as Babyfather - comparisons with the latter are only strengthened when Massiah enters with the lyrics, his words delivered with that same calm-yet-intense vibe that Blunt conjures on his releases. On the flip, ‘144,000’ bumps and snaps like a lo-fi reinterpretation of Memphis hip-hop. This one’s out via Jon Rust’s Levels label.
