The third instalment of Nils Frahm’s Encores series finds the composer shifting his focus once again. Where Encores 1 focussed on melody and 2 on ambient composition, Encores 3 centrepiece ‘All Armed’ finds Frahm drawing out the more percussive elements of his music. Largely working with electronic instruments, the track’s skittering rhythms and pensive tones are pitched somewhere between Peter Zummo and mid-period Björk. Prior to ‘All Armed’ the busy, brief opener ‘Artificially Intelligent’ sets us up nicely for what is about to happen. Mind you, it’s not all change here - closer ‘Amirador’ finds Frahm settling back into the droning, dusky ambiences of Encores 2.
