This CD collates all 3 encores releases released since mid 2018. Encores 1 focusses on an acoustic pallet of sounds with solo piano and harmonium at the core. Encores 2 explores more ambient landscapes and Encores 3 focusses on the more percussive and electronic elements.
Encores 1: Recorded in Nils Frahm's studio at the Funkhaus in Berlin, as part of the same sessions for All Melody, Encores 1 is made of the same melodic ambience yet carries it further into the night. Loaded up with cinematic ambience and left to ripen in a lounge-jazz atmosphere, the first four tracks of Encore 1 see the piano take centre stage before 'Harmonium in the Well' steals the show with it's slowly expanding inward looking drones. If you were captivated by All Melody than you won't really go wrong here...
Encores 2: Nils Frahm returns to the stage with the second volume of his Encores series of EPs, following the show-stopping All Melody album, released in January 2018. With the first volume of Encores, Nils Frahm focused on a fully acoustic sound by performing on only solo piano and harmonium. Whereas on Encores 2 he sets out to explore a more ambient landscape that reaches new heights on the astral projection gaze of 12-minute centrepiece showpiece Spells. Encores 2 is at once familiar, orbiting the universe of All Melody yet its journey outward ensures it builds up and inhabits a new world, entirely of its own.
Encores 3: Finding the composer drawing out the more percussive elements of his music. Largely working with electronic instruments, the EP's skittering rhythms and pensive tones are pitched somewhere between Peter Zummo and mid-period Björk. Prior to ‘All Armed’ the busy, brief opener ‘Artificially Intelligent’ sets us up nicely for what is about to happen. Mind you, it’s not all change here - closer ‘Amirador’ finds Frahm settling back into the droning, dusky ambiences of Encores 2.
