What we have here from Theo Parrish (with help from Silentjay, Simon Mavin, Perrin Moss and Paul Bender) is two dance-ready variants of ‘What You Gonna Ask For’, a prime cut in the vein of early Detroit techno joy. Handclaps and tambourines set the pace over a warm acoustic piano phrase, and a slick keyboard zip takes all that jazz into fusion territory. It’s all part of the tentative buildup, as shakers make way for a sturdy kick-hi hat beat designed for fancy footwork. Dego sits out the first one as the rest of the gang cook up some soulful Sound Signature goodness. ‘What You Gonna Ask For’ is a funky Detroit delight, all jazzy keys, handclaps and a rolling house beat. Soulful vocals and saxophone provide the melodic interest. The Dego edit of ‘What You Gonna Ask For’ stretches things out a little. This is Parrish at his most ebullient, much more ‘Preacher’s Coming’ than ‘Flowers’. Theo Parrish is having a party.
