Any other artist hellbent on deep diving into his own work over the course of years would come across an awful bore at best, or a narcissist at worst. Not so for indie folk legend Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, who, with the help of Bryce Dessner (The National) and Eighth Blackbird, revives his own works as necessary context for reinterpreting pieces by late composer Julius Eastman. Billy and Eastman make for unexpected bedfellows, but the delicate minimalism across When We Are Inhuman suggests a far deeper kinship.
