Tobias Freund is getting plenty of joy from mining his archives at the moment. After dropping The Beginning - a set of largely-unreleased recordings he made in the 80’s under the name Pink Elln - he now returns to the period again in his Tobias. guise. The tracks of Studio Works 1986-1988 were created during a period where Freund had frequent access to recording equipment through his job as a studio engineer. Recorded to analogue tape and then cut up by hand, these unusual tracks include rhythmic experiments ala Guerilla Welfare or Tom Tom Club, post-minimalism in the Midori Takada mould and fourth-world beat takes that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Eno & Byrne’s My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. A unique and rewarding listen.
