Thom Yorke follows up the recent release of ‘Anima’ with a four track remix EP that focusses around ‘Not The News’, one of the lead pieces from the record.
We open with the ‘Extendo Mix’, an extended version of the original that bleeps, throbs and teases its way through the melodies and vocals of the track, following a looser structural identity. Some of the more traditional arrangements are eschewed, paving the way for an abstracted journey through the song. Mark Pritchard comes up with what might be the straightest version of the four, the remix holding a fixed tone throughout, similar to that used in many Gqom tracks. A delicately composed interpretation with not an ounce of fat on it, he’s locked into some of the most enticing moods of the song and built on them here.
Jamaican music collective Equiknoxx add their trademark swing, simultaneously cloaking Thom’s vocals in a ghostly fog that through its sparsity, points to a set of darker undertones. Clark opts for a low slung, industrial take, melding harsh frequencies and sections of melodic discordance alongside periods of emotional transcendence. It’s a fine effort, reminiscent of some of his best work.
This is a hugely inventive remix EP, giving insight into Thom’s musical taste and some of the other dimensions leading off from Anima.
