Epiphany is the first new release from Ross From Friends since the producer dropped his debut LP Family Portrait back in the summer of 2018. He has clearly thought long and hard about his next move, and as such Epiphany is a set of tunes as carefully crafted as anything the one born Felix Weatherall has previously delivered to us.

The first thing that you notice about Epiphany is how clear it sounds. Compared to the lo-fi, scuffed-up tunes that Ross From Friends offered up on his early releases, cuts like ‘The Revolution’ and ‘Epiphany’ are notably hi-def. This newfound clarity is a good move from Weatherall given how rich and full his production now sounds - the beats here are harder, the atmospheres have grown bigger and the textures are more detailed.

‘Epiphany’ and ‘The Revolution’ stick to Weatherall’s preferred deep/tech house style, but there is also a widescreen feel here that nudges them in the direction of artists like Tycho, Maribou State and Bonobo. Both tracks also contain the sort of halcyon, half-remembered rave sounds one finds in the work of Lone. The snaky jack of ‘Phantom Ratio’ is a meandering take on the Innervisions style that features a slippery, constantly morphing bassline.

The Epiphany EP is a set of crystalline, emotive deep house tunes from Ross From Friends.
