Be careful when you read that title - it’s A Point Between by Floating Spectrum and not, as this writer thought, a new Floating Points record called A Spectrum Between. A Spectrum Between is, in fact, the first LP from Berlin-based composer/audio technologist Mei-Fang Liau. Liau presents a monolithic take on drone and ambient composition here, one that has us thinking of the shoegaze-inspired vistas of bvdub. A track such as ‘Inner island’ coalesces from disparate swirls of synth into the sort of huge, distorted soundscapes one associates more with the work of bands like Sunn O))). There is also a sense of alien electronics to opener ‘The early green outburst’ that operates in a similar sphere to William Basinski’s extra-terrestrial recordings.
