In heavy anticipation of the Summer 2019 full-length release Utility, Barker prepares the groundwork with an EP on label mainstay Ostgut Ton. Barker 001 bears the mark of an experimental phase, as is Barker’s customary approach to techno; his keen sense for a maniacally discombobulated beat and strikingly cheery strangeness shines through on ‘Kickboxing’, while allowing for forays into lilting melody on ‘Neuron Collider’. ‘Maximum Utility’, a namesake hinting at things to come, lingers on the intense with a hot tremolo rhythm.
