Jeff McIlwain aka Lusine returns on Ghostly International with an EP to follow up his acclaimed 2017 album Sensorimotor. Retrace finds the Seattle-based Texan producer slightly rerouting his sensibilities, discarding the maximalist composition of his previous effort for elaborations on the strikingly simple. He’s still armed with an array of hardware and choice field recordings — a spindly sting here, an uncanny vocal flourish there — but his restraint pays dividends in the house-inflected ‘Turn Back’, a morphing number permitted to end in a different place to where it started. But this Lusine is ultimately a more immediate one, guided by the vocals of Jenn Champion and CIFIKA into avant-pop-meets-electro territory.
