All glory to the Hypnobeat! This latest EP from the James Dean Brown-led project is another set of anti-techno that delivers on the promise of the band’s name. The tracks of Hypnobeat’s Forbidden Planet are, indeed, some hypnotic beats. ‘Polychrome Desert’ and ‘Sumatra Railway’ lope onwards on burbling 808s in a manner that recalls the edge-of-the-dancefloor explorations of labels like The Trilogy Tapes and Disk Records. Sandwiched between these is the almost Pram-esque psychedelia of ‘Spies In Malaysia’.
