On Simian Angel, Oren Ambarchi joins forces with the Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista (Herbie Hancock, Brian Eno). The pair create blissful vistas across this beatific album. Ambarchi’s guitar tones often sound more like droning synth pads and Baptista’s drum (and occasionally voice) interjections give the tracks subtle motion. The result is a weightless and wonderful listen. There’s Pat Metheny and The Necks in the fabric of Simian Angel, but also some of Laraaji’s open-hearted new age compositions.
