Detroit: before it became the birthplace of house, it housed a vibrant avant garde jazz scene. Driven by a musical and political awakening following the death of John Coltrane and the infamous Detroit riots of 1967, Faruq Z. Bey founded Griot Galaxy, which became a prominent voice at Detroit’s jazz epicentre. Well over a decade into things, 1982 saw the curiously unceremonious limited-run release of Kins, an LP so full of blistering energy it’s a wonder it took this long to re-emerge.
