Constituting a wondrous middle ground between electronic, jazz and the soundtrack to a forgotten art house flick, Jon Doe One’s Small Numbers takes on a wealth of genre challenges — and wins. Expanding on a set of live collaborations, project leader Hannes d’Hoine enlists a solid quintet — guitar, flute, marimba, drums and clarinet — to animate these eight musical vignettes. Each has a distinct character — the sleuth of ‘P(O)ursuite’, the Lynchian noir of ‘Daydream’ — and yet builds a cohesive world.
