Bleep

The excellent 12th Isle imprint drop a gorgeous record from Pataphysical. Periphera is full of gently-bobbing ambiences informed by Balearic textures and dubwise production. The tunes on Periphera’s A-side patter along sweetly, their woozy beats underpinning nuggets of production of the sort one might find in a Larry Heard number. However, rather than these sounds being used in the service of a Mr. Fingers-style club track, here they spiral away into the ether. The record’s second half is even more chill, with Pataphysical largely removing drums and allowing the listener to fully luxuriate in the quixotic and charming ambiences. It’s a sound not dissimilar to golden-era Mille Plateau.
