Electro veteran Carl Finlow is back on CPU under cover of his Silicon Scally alias. The Cobalt Blue EP follows on in much the same vein as the first Silicon Scally drop on the Sheffield label (2018’s Projections). Indeed, Cobalt Blue functions much like many of the other records released through CPU. This is a set of squiggly club jams that glide along on chunky basslines, cyberpunk keys and gently insistent 808s. The outlier is ‘Asynchronous’, a cut on which Finlow introduces some bombing kick drums and busy, atonal synth rhythms. While there are some ominous moments - check the brooding closer ‘Protocol 2’ - by and large Cobalt Blue is a welcoming affair.
