On Helm’s first LP for Pan since 2015’s Olympic Mess, Luke Younger draws you into a world of stultified drones, sombre beats and slip-sliding samples. While Chemical Flowers borders on ambient music this record is too changeable and tense to comfortably take on the tag. Instead the pieces here are reminiscent of fellow musical visionaries like Yves Tumor, Rupert Clervaux and Huerco S.. The manner in which a track like ‘I Knew You Would Respond’ shifts from arid atmospheres to a lopsided approximation of hip-hop is exactly the sort of thing that Tumor would have tried on Experiencing The Deposit Of Faith.
